The 52-Week Money Challenge: How It Works, the Full Chart and a Reverse Version for Tight Budgets

Savings challenge and monthly budget pages inside the BECOME Binder

The 52-week money challenge is one of the simplest savings plans there is. In week 1 you save $1. In week 2 you save $2. Each week you save one dollar more than the week before, until week 52, when you save $52. Keep going and by the end of the year you will have saved $1,378.

It works because it starts small. Nobody misses a dollar, and by the time the amounts get bigger, saving has become a habit.

The 52-week money challenge chart

Weeks Save each week Running total at end
1 to 4 $1, $2, $3, $4 $10
5 to 13 $5 up to $13 $91
14 to 26 $14 up to $26 $351
27 to 39 $27 up to $39 $780
40 to 52 $40 up to $52 $1,378

Tip: write all 52 numbers on a page and color in each one as you go. Watching the page fill up is half the fun.

The reverse 52-week challenge (best for tight budgets)

The classic version gets hardest in November and December, which is exactly when money is tightest for most people. The reverse version flips it: save $52 in week 1, $51 in week 2, and so on down to $1 in the last week. Same $1,378 total, but the big weeks happen while your motivation is high and the holidays get easy.

Other versions that fit real life

  • Pick-a-number: each week, choose any number from 1 to 52 that you have not used yet and save that amount. Tight week? Pick a small one.
  • Half challenge: save 50 cents, then $1, then $1.50. You finish with $689.
  • Bi-weekly: match it to your paycheck and save two weeks of numbers each payday.
  • Double: save $2, $4, $6. You finish with $2,756.

How to actually finish all 52 weeks

  1. Give the money a job. "Emergency fund" or "car repair fund" is much easier to protect than "savings."
  2. Use a separate account. A free high-yield savings account keeps the money out of sight and earns a little interest.
  3. Automate it. Set a weekly transfer on the same day you get paid.
  4. Track it on paper. Coloring in a chart gives you a small win every week, and small wins are what keep you going.
  5. Miss a week? Do not quit. Just pick up where you left off. A half-finished challenge still beats no savings.

Keep your challenge in one place

The BECOME Binder includes color-in savings challenges, a monthly budget and debt payoff pages, so your money plan lives next to your goals instead of in a forgotten notes app. The COMEBACK Binder has a $1,000 fund tracker and a $10,000 dream goal page for bigger targets.
