How to Start a Business With No Money: A Step-by-Step Plan

Most businesses do not fail because they started small. They fail because they spent money before they knew anyone would pay. Starting with no money forces you to do it the smart way: prove people want it first.
This is general information, not legal, tax or financial advice. Check your state's rules for registering a business.
Step 1: Start with what you already have
Write three lists: skills people ask you for help with, things you already own (a phone, a car, a laptop, tools) and topics you could talk about for hours. The best no-money businesses sit where these lists overlap.
Step 2: Pick a business you can start for free
- Services: cleaning, hair, nails, tutoring, pet sitting, social media help, editing, bookkeeping.
- Digital products: guides, templates, printables or courses using free design tools.
- Print-on-demand: products are only made after a customer pays, so there is no inventory.
- Pre-orders: take payment first, then produce. Be clear about the ship date.
Step 3: Get one paying customer before you build anything big
Tell people exactly what you offer and what it costs. Post it, message people who asked before and ask friends to share. One paying customer teaches you more than a month of planning.
Step 4: Use free tools
- A free email account and a simple link-in-bio page.
- Free design tools for flyers and social posts.
- Free invoicing or payment links.
- Social media and short videos for marketing, which cost time, not money.
Step 5: Reinvest your first profits
Pay for only what makes you more money: better photos, a website, supplies. Keep business money in a separate account from day one.
Step 6: Make a 90-day plan
| Days | Focus |
|---|---|
| 1 to 30 | Pick your offer, set a price, get your first 1 to 3 customers. |
| 31 to 60 | Ask for reviews, post consistently, improve the offer. |
| 61 to 90 | Raise prices if you are busy, add one new product or service, set up simple bookkeeping. |
Step 7: Track your money and your mindset
Write down every sale, every cost and every win. Starting a business is emotional, so keep track of what is working, not just what is not.
