How to Start a Faith Journal: Prayer Journal Ideas and Bible Journaling Prompts for Beginners

The BECOME Binder with Proverbs 31:25 on the cover

A faith journal is simply a place to write your prayers, the verses that speak to you and what God is teaching you in this season. You do not need to be a writer or an artist. You just need honesty and a few minutes.

Why keep a prayer journal?

  • It helps you focus. Writing slows your mind down so your prayers do not drift.
  • It shows you answered prayers. Looking back months later is one of the most faith-building things you can do.
  • It makes Scripture personal. A verse you wrote down and thought about stays with you.

How to start: 5 simple steps

  1. Pick a time. Morning coffee, lunch break or before bed. Same time each day builds the habit.
  2. Start with one verse. Read a short passage, such as one Psalm or a few verses from a Gospel.
  3. Write what stood out. One word or line that caught your attention.
  4. Write your prayer. Talk to God like you would talk to someone who loves you.
  5. Date it. So you can look back and see what changed.

The SOAP method for Bible journaling

SOAP is a simple, popular way to study a verse:

  • S, Scripture: write out the verse.
  • O, Observation: what does it say? Who is speaking, and what is happening?
  • A, Application: what does it mean for my life today?
  • P, Prayer: write a short prayer in response.
