How to Start Over in Life: A Practical Guide for Your Fresh Start

Starting over can happen at any age and for many reasons: a divorce or breakup, losing a job, getting sober, moving, a health scare, or simply realizing your life does not look the way you want. It is scary. It is also one of the bravest things a person can do.
If starting over comes with feelings that are too heavy to carry alone, reach out to someone you trust or a professional. In a crisis in the US, call or text 988.
1. Let yourself feel it
Grief, anger and relief can all show up at once. Write it down. Name what you lost before you plan what is next.
2. Take stock of where you are
Be honest about money, health, relationships, home and work. Rate each from 1 to 10. You cannot plan a route without knowing your starting point.
3. Stabilize your money first
List your bills, build a simple budget and start a small emergency fund. Our guide on saving when money is tight walks through it.
4. Build a simple daily routine
When life feels out of control, small routines give you ground to stand on: wake up at the same time, drink water, move your body, write three lines in a journal.
5. Decide who you are becoming
Instead of "I want my old life back," ask: who do I want to be a year from now? Write a description of that person's ordinary day.
6. Set three goals, not ten
Pick one goal for money, one for your mind or faith, and one for your future, such as a new job, a business or a home. Break each into a 90-day plan.
7. Find your people
Support groups, a church, a gym, a recovery meeting, a group chat of friends who get it. Starting over is lighter when you are not doing it alone.
8. Celebrate small wins
First month on budget, first week of a new routine, first day you did not cry. Write them down. They add up.
We made the BECOME Binder and the COMEBACK Binder for exactly this. They are guided binders with money and savings pages, faith and mind sections and goal planning for whoever you are becoming. Founding Edition pre-orders are $65 for the first 50 buyers of each design.
